Removing graffiti from Fielders® cladding and Dominator® fencing

When treating graffiti that’s been scrawled on Fielders® cladding or Dominator® fencing manufactured from COLORBOND® steel, as tempting as it may be, it’s vital not to reach for harsh cleaners and abrasive cloths or scourers. These cleaning methods will damage the surface of the COLORBOND® steel and not only void your warranty but leave blemishes and discoloration on the COLORBOND® steel surface.

To begin cleaning, try treating the graffiti in the same way you would for any stain dirt deposits on COLORBOND® steel: wash the surface with water then gently rub the area with a soft cloth or soft bristle nylon brush using pure soap or a mild non-abrasive kitchen detergent. Finish up by thoroughly rinsing the site with clean water. If this method is getting results, repeat it.

If water and a mild detergent isn’t working, you’ll need to try something different. Again, stay clear of abrasive cleaning pads and some stronger solvents. Abrasive scourers will scratch the prepainted surface of the COLORBOND® steel which may  lead to corrosion, while chemicals such as acetone, methylethyl ketone, toluene and general thinners or commercial paint thinners should never applied because they can damage the surface, effect the long term performance and aesthetics of COLORBOND® steel and will also void your warranty.

One graffiti removal product that can be effective at removing graffiti from COLORBOND® steel without damaging the surface is DuPont™ Graffiti Remover EZ-3463™.

General procedure for use of DuPont™ graffiti remover

Before using this spray, familiarise yourself with the correct use and safety directions shown on the label. Also ensure you’re wearing appropriate personal protection equipment including gloves, glasses and clothing to cover exposed skin.

Begin by rinsing the affected area with water to clean and prepare the surface. The product should then be spot tested at the edge of the affected area by applying it to a small section and allowing it to sit for about a minute.

After this, gently rub off some of the graffiti that was treated with the remover using a soft, clean cloth or sponge. How much pressure is needed to remove the graffiti will depend on the type of paint used; you’ll also have to rinse the surface continually to minimise residual staining.

Repeat the preparation and application process as outlined to the rest of the affected areas. Stubborn graffiti may need extra time and multiple applications of Graffiti Remover to get rid of all paint. Once the graffiti is removed, it’s important to thoroughly wash the area with clean water to remove any residual product or overspray.

Please note that using DuPont™ Graffiti Remover EZ-3463™ will leave a glossier shine where it’s been applied – this is only temporary and will gradually diminish over several days.
