Charles Darwin University Danala: Shaped by place, scale and performance

Charles Darwin ARAMAX Roof

Some projects announce themselves quietly. Others reshape how a city works. Charles Darwin University’s Danala Education and Community Precinct is firmly in the second category.

Sitting in the centre of Darwin’s CBD, the $240 million development has been designed as more than a university campus. It is a public-facing building, one intended to draw people in and keep them there, whether they are students, staff or members of the wider community. That ambition brings its own pressures, particularly in the Top End, where climate, scale and durability all have to be resolved at once.

From the outset, Danala was conceived as a place for people, not just a piece of institutional infrastructure.

A building that works at city level

Designed by MODE Design and delivered by DCOH (formerly Halikos), the precinct is organised as a vertical campus, with different levels serving different functions. Teaching and staff spaces sit alongside areas that are deliberately open to the public, helping the building feel part of the city rather than separate from it.

At street level, this intent is most visible. The integrated library, combining the CDU Library and Library & Archives NT collections, is a clear signal that Danala is meant to be used by more than one audience. It is this overlap between education and community that defines the project’s role in Darwin’s ongoing urban renewal.

Cultural meaning and local participation

The project’s name, Danala, means “dillybag” in the Larrakia language. It is a simple but meaningful acknowledgement of place, and one that reflects the broader approach taken across the project.

During construction, more than 173 First Nations people were employed, contributing over 70,000 labour hours across the build. In total, the project recorded more than 550,000 work hours, underlining its scale and its impact on the local workforce.

For a civic building of this prominence, those outcomes matter. They are part of what gives the precinct relevance beyond its physical form.

ARAMAX® and the realities of scale

Large public buildings tend to expose weaknesses quickly, particularly when it comes to the roof. Spans are longer, tolerances tighter, and expectations higher, both visually and technically.

At Danala, Fielders ARAMAX® was specified across approximately 800 square metres of roofing, supplied in 8 metre sheet lengths. The profile supported the need for strong, consistent roof lines across a complex structure, while also delivering the strength required for Darwin’s conditions.

There was also a practical challenge. The ARAMAX® sheets were supplied from Adelaide and transported approximately 3,000 kilometres to site. Despite the distance, the material arrived without damage, allowing installation to proceed as planned and without compromise.

A shift in perspective on site

Danala marked the second Darwin project where DCOH Constructions had specified ARAMAX®. With greater exposure to the profile at scale, the project team was able to see its value more clearly, particularly in terms of finish, consistency and overall performance.

The experience has strengthened confidence in ARAMAX® as a reliable solution for future projects in the region.

What this project leaves behind

Danala is not a building that relies on a single feature to make its point. Its success sits in how well the parts work together, from planning and cultural recognition through to material selection and delivery.

For architects and specifiers working on civic projects in demanding environments, it’s a reminder that performance-led decisions often sit quietly in the background, yet have a lasting influence on how a building is experienced and maintained.

Fielders is proud to have contributed to a project that is helping redefine education and community space in Darwin, and to see ARAMAX® perform at the scale and standard this landmark precinct demands.
