The Project

Heralded a ‘game-changer’ for architecture in South Australia, the $200 million South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) building in Adelaide’s CBD has redefined the city’s north-western skyline.

Designed by architectural firm Woods Bagot, the world-class building was constructed to house up to 700 researchers as the state’s leading medical research facility, being the first stage of a new
health and bio-medical precinct.

Fielders were contracted to provide 3,000m2 of KingFlor® KF57® structural formwork, plus 3,000m2 of KingKlip® 700 steel roofing for the new development.

Woods Bagot and the SAHMRI building were the recipients of five coveted awards at the 2014 South Australian Architecture Awards including Public Architecture, Commercial Architecture and Steel Architecture, plus a commendation at the 2014 National Architecture Awards.

The Solution

KingFlor® KF57® was selected for the SAHMRI building due to its longer spanning capability and lower preparatory costs. The profile’s reduced need for temporary props allowed a fast-track construction to assist the builders in on-time completion.

KingKlip® 700 was chosen given its flexibility to accommodate the curved design on the top of the building’s roof, a key design feature of the complex.

The Process

KingFlor® KF57® was installed in the SAHMRI building throughout the floor-by-floor construction of the complex. KingKlip® 700 was installed towards the completion of the project
in late 2013.

KingKlip® 700 was rolled on site using the Fielders Mobile Mill® which allowed for sheet lengths with a span of up to 30 metres. Rolling the material on site eliminated the need for them to be transported by truck, allowing for greater lengths which assisted the builders in a faster installation time.

KingFlor® KF57®

Fielders KingFlor® is a revolutionary steel formwork solution ideal for complete concrete slabs in concrete and steel framed construction over lengthy spans. With a longer span and deeper
profile than existing formwork systems on the market, KingFlor® KF57® is one of the most cost-effective solutions. Project uses include standard purlin construction, single skin roof applications, vertical wall, conical tapered roof profiles, and structural deck and cassette type roof applications, re-roof framing and plywood substrate roofing situations.

KingKlip® 700

Fielders KingKlip® 700 is amongst the widest concealed-fix deckings available on the market, suitable for a range of commercial purposes including flat and curved roofs. Featuring unbeatable size, strength and watertightness, the profile comes in the full range of light and heavy gauge COLORBOND® colours.
